A summer-long competition of inter-club foursomes golf, contested by ten member clubs across Perthshire and Clackmannanshire — formed in the mid-1950s and still played in the spirit of its founders.
A Tradition of Friendly Competition
The Ochil League was formed in the mid-1950s by Mr Andrew Dougal of Muckhart Golf Club, and was originally christened "The 9 Hole League" — its founding membership comprised exclusively those clubs whose courses ran to only nine holes. In its early decades the league was kept running by Peter Craigon snr and Eric Starritt, both of whom became custodians of its character and good order.
Today the league brings together ten clubs from the rolling parkland of Clackmannanshire and the hills and straths of Perthshire — a mixture of 9-hole village courses and full 18-hole tests, all sharing the same easy welcome and competitive spirit. Matches are played in foursomes format over the summer months, with the trophy contested annually.
Member clubs range from the championship parkland of Alloa (designed by James Braid in 1935) to the 9-hole gem at Comrie on the Laggan Braes, taking in the dramatic Ochil-backdropped fairways of Muckhart and the Loch Leven views at Kinross. The hills give the league its name; the clubs give it its heart.
